The Governing Council has given the green light for the construction of the new IES Astigarraga BHI, with a total investment of 22.8 million euros. The works are expected to take 24 months, marking the first time Astigarraga will have its own Secondary Education institute.
The significant demographic growth experienced by the municipality in recent years has increased educational needs, reinforcing the necessity for a dedicated secondary school. Previously, students completing Primary Education continued their studies mainly at the institute in Martutene or in nearby towns.
The new institute will be designed to accommodate four complete lines of Compulsory Secondary Education, comprising 16 ESO units, alongside specialized classrooms, a gymnasium, a dining hall, and other necessary facilities for quality education.
Looking ahead, the project includes the possibility of future expansion with six Bachillerato classrooms and new specialized spaces, ensuring its adaptability to the municipality's demographic and educational evolution.
In other news, the Council has approved a call for grants totaling 3.35 million euros for fisheries and aquaculture producer organizations in the Basque Country for 2026, aimed at strengthening the sector's planning, marketing, and modernization capabilities.
These grants are divided into two lines: one for preparing and executing Production and Marketing Plans, and another to support the consolidation of newly formed producer organizations. Applications can be submitted electronically until September 30, 2026.
Furthermore, the Handitu Innova 2026 program has been approved, a new grant initiative with a budget of 1.25 million euros to foster significant investments in technological innovation within primary agricultural production in Euskadi.
Additionally, 2.7 million euros will be allocated to urban integration actions for the railway infrastructure in Eibar, managed by Euskal Trenbide Sarea, to better integrate the train network within the town.
In sports, 700,000 euros will be dedicated to promoting the participation of athletes in international competitions and top-tier women's state leagues in 2026.
Finally, 300,000 euros will be provided to non-profit organizations working on the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Euskadi during 2026.
