Astigarraga's Erribera Kulturgunea will host the third edition of its family pairs chess tournament this Sunday, featuring 40 teams and setting a new participation record for the event.

Organized by the Astigarraga Xake Kluba, this event has helped solidify the practice of chess in the town. The competition is scheduled to begin at 10:15 AM and is expected to run throughout the morning, concluding around 2:00 PM.

"It's a special tournament, as there isn't another one like it in Gipuzkoa that is both for pairs and family-oriented. It's played with teams of two components, the best player from one pair against the highest-level player from the other. There are seven rounds, and each player starts with seven minutes on the clock, with three seconds added for each move."

A key new feature for this edition is the presence of a professional photographer to set up a small photocall. Organizers emphasize that the family nature of the championship makes it very appealing, encouraging even those with limited chess experience to participate if a family member is more skilled. This creates a pleasant mix of players with varying levels.
Additionally, a lunch will be provided midway through the tournament, followed by an awards ceremony at the end. The top three pairs will be recognized, along with special awards for players from Astigarraga or club members. Registrations, which are free, sold out three weeks before the tournament, demonstrating the event's significant popularity and success.

"We notice that the level is increasingly high. There will be very amateur pairs, but also some very tough ones. There will be someone who has won the Euskadi championship five times in a row in lower categories, with their brother who is also very good."

The club states that Sunday's tournament will be “manageable, friendly, and feature a phenomenal atmosphere,” offering great balance for all participants.
