Astigarraga's Foru Plaza was bustling on Sunday for Pea Day, an event celebrating local farm produce and traditional Basque sports.

Astigarraga celebrated Pea Day on Sunday as part of the Lurraldia events. After a week focused on the importance of the Basque farmhouse (caserío), this event aimed to value the contribution of local producers.
With favorable weather, Foru Plaza was filled with people. Visitors could purchase high-quality vegetables, as well as view exhibitions on seeds and livestock, including horses. The event was particularly attractive for children, and thanks to the contribution of local farmers, pastry products were also available.
In terms of gastronomy, pea-based pintxos were the highlight, as they are every year. Attendees had the opportunity to taste them, as well as sample cider directly from a small barrel (kupela) installed near the town hall entrance.
The atmosphere was further enlivened by a demonstration of herri kirolak (traditional Basque sports) by two teams captained by Ander Altuna and Jokin Urretabizkaia. The young participants showcased their strength with stone lifting and wood chopping, among other disciplines, generating significant excitement among the onlookers.
This event concluded the week's program of activities, following the San Isidro Day celebration on Friday. The difficult situation facing the primary sector was also highlighted, emphasizing the impact of international decisions and imports on the quality of local products and the primary sector of Euskal Herria. Given that 70% of Astigarraga's territory is rural, farmhouses and farmers are of vital importance to the municipality.
