The tunnel cleaning carried out by the community last autumn has proven insufficient. Technicians from the Provincial Council have confirmed that the tunnel's wall and ceiling structure is quite unstable. Consequently, the tunnel has been temporarily closed to reinforce the structure and reopen it once safety conditions are met.
The mayor, Olatz Lezeta, stated that the necessary intervention will be carried out "in the future," although it is not yet specified "when and how" it will take place.
Local residents have warned that some pedestrians heading from Antzuola towards Deskarga, upon finding the path closed, are jumping over the adjacent fence and continuing their journey through a field. They have reminded that this field belongs to the property of the Amilleta farmhouse, where livestock is often present, and have requested that this practice be avoided.
For users of the greenway, an alternative route recommended is to head from the Galardi farmhouse towards the Basalgo road. Upon reaching Galardi farmhouse, instead of turning left, one should turn right, continue uphill upon reaching the Basalgo road, and then turn right from Garaiko to continue towards Deskarga, leaving the tunnel behind.
Similar interventions have been carried out in Antzuola on the route where the Vasco-Navarro train once passed, now a greenway. For instance, in 2023, works were undertaken to repair the Jauregi tunnel.
