Last Sunday, Elgoibar commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Ziardamendi events, a significant milestone in our collective history. These events united diverse sensitivities in defense of Basque democracy, freedom, and self-government in 1936.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the City Council organized a tribute event, inviting the entire institutional representation, municipal political forces, and social actors. The aim of the event, as every year, was to create a space for all citizens and their representatives to be present and feel represented.
Therefore, a format based on respect and thoughtful silence was designed: a journey to Ziardamendi passing through the common graves. The City Council understood that the true space of the tribute should be the people who fought there and the values they defended, prioritizing the memory and dignity of the victims.
For this year's anniversary, the Elgoibar City Council wanted the tribute to be a special and significant event. To achieve this, all institutions, political groups, and associations linked to the municipality's historical memory were invited, ensuring the commemoration was as representative and participatory as possible.
Additionally, the Haritz Dantza Taldea (Haritz Dance Group) and the Municipal Txistulari Band performed, contributing to the solemnity and warmth the tribute deserved.
The historical memory of Elgoibar belongs to the entire town. Consequently, the City Council has reaffirmed its firm commitment to continue working, believing that democratic memory should always be a space for gathering and mutual recognition.
