Deba's Cultural Association held its members' day last Saturday, with the main event being the presentation of prizes dedicated to Jose Manuel Ostolaza. These awards were established to recognize and appreciate the contributions of individuals and organizations that enrich the local cultural landscape.
The event commenced with a brief review of Jose Manuel Ostolaza's life and career. Following this, members of the Deba Cultural Association's board took the stage and presented a bouquet of flowers in his memory.
This year's Creator Award was presented to artist Willy Berasaluze. Through his work in sculpture, collage, and photography, he has left his mark on various parts of the town. Notably, he was the creator of the sculptures for the Ostolaza Prizes, adding a special significance to the recognition.
The Dynamics Award was given to the choir Aitzuri Abesbatza. Founded in 1994, this group has demonstrated its ability to unite and move citizens through music with hundreds of voices over the years.
The Essential Award was received by the association Zuhatza Euskara Elkartea, for its continuous efforts since 1997 towards a more Basque-speaking Deba and for being a crucial facilitator in promoting the use of the Basque language.
The Seed Award was presented to writer Nerea Loiola. She transitioned from engineering to literature and has quickly established a significant presence in Basque literature.
Finally, the Special Award was bestowed upon the music group Skabidean, for spreading social commitment and Basque culture through ska, reggae, and rocksteady rhythms since 2012. The band has also released a song in honor of Jose Manuel Ostolaza.
The award ceremony also featured short performances by various cultural artists, including the dance group Gure Kai, musicians Josu Salegi and Miguel Laguna, the Aitzuri Abesbatza choir, the group Skabidean, the Iturrian Choir, and writer Rafael Bravo.
