Organizers have outlined the conference's goals: to provide a deeper understanding of the disease, clarify existing doubts, and help overcome certain myths and misconceptions still prevalent in society. The PNV highlighted the increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, noting their impact not only on affected individuals but also on their families, caregivers, and entire communities. Therefore, it is crucial to address this topic through knowledge, science, and normalization.
It was emphasized that Gipuzkoa and Euskadi are regions with significant scientific and biosanitary activity, where numerous researchers and health professionals work to better understand the disease, improve diagnosis and treatments, and enhance people's quality of life. In this context, the Elgoibar conference aims to bring topics of current and social interest in science and health to the public in an accessible and understandable manner.
The conference will combine the complementary perspectives of two professionals: Gurutz Linazasoro Cristobal, a neurologist and researcher with extensive experience in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's and Alzheimer's; and Maite Solas Zubiaurre, an Elgoibar-based researcher and professor at the University of Navarra's Faculty of Pharmacy and Nutrition, specializing in the biological mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease.
Both speakers will explain what Alzheimer's is and how it develops, discuss the contributions of recent research, cover current knowledge on diagnosis and prevention, and address unanswered questions. They will also examine common myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease, presenting scientific information in an easy-to-understand format.
The event will take place on Monday, September 21st, at 6:30 PM in the Aita Agirre Kulturgunea. Admission will be free. The objective is not only to discuss Alzheimer's but also to help better understand the disease and clarify associated fears, stigmas, and misconceptions through knowledge.
