The Aixerrotape Cyclotourist Club of Gernika-Lumo is strengthening its presence in Urdaibai by organizing the Oiz Challenge and the Jabi Amorrortu cyclotourist march, scheduled for June 13, which will pay tribute to former cyclist Roberto Laiseka.

The XVI edition of the Aixerrotape Cyclotourist March, one of the most significant events on the two-wheeled calendar in the heart of Busturialdea, has already surpassed 600 registered participants. This new stage is approached under a renewed leadership and with the firm objective of promoting equality in sports, featuring the notable presence of former professional cyclist Roberto Laiseka, who will receive a well-deserved tribute for his career.
Thus, long-distance cycling once again brings color to the roads of Busturialdea. The legendary Aixerrotape reaches its sixteenth edition, and with registrations now closed, the organization has expressed satisfaction with the volume of participation, especially highlighting the increase in female presence. Thanks to the awareness work carried out by the Bizkaia club, nearly a hundred women will gather at the start, a milestone that reflects the positive evolution towards parity in this type of endurance event.
To accommodate all skill levels, the organization has designed three routes that traverse some of the territory's most spectacular landscapes. The Urdaibai Gozatu option, 72 kilometers long, is designed for those who wish to calmly enjoy the surroundings of the Biosphere Reserve. Meanwhile, the Bizkaiko Kostaldea route raises the challenge to 128 kilometers, combining the toughness of the asphalt with the beauty of the coastline. Finally, the Oiz Erronka stands as the queen event: 163 kilometers of pure effort and emblematic mountain passes that will demand the best physical performance from participants.
This 2026 edition marks a turning point for the Aixerrotape Cyclotourist Society. After years of dedication from the previous board of directors, a group of young club members has taken over the organization. This generational handover not only ensures the continuity of the event but also brings a renewed vision that prioritizes road safety and environmental sustainability.
This new impetus has received the support of important sponsors, led by Nissan Blendio Kalauto and Rural Kutxa, in addition to the backing of local entities such as Toki Alai restaurant, ORBA, Gernika Gimnasioa, and Adaba Fisioterapia. The presence of Roberto Laiseka, stage winner in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, will provide a golden finale to a day that promises epic moments and excitement on the roads of Bizkaia.
