The Association of Basque-Speaking Municipalities (UEMA) will celebrate the Basque-Speaking Municipalities Day in Otxandio on May 16, aiming to highlight the critical situation of the Basque language 'arnasguneak' (linguistic lungs) and call for urgent measures.

UEMA has stated that recent research and data have triggered red alarms, indicating that if no action is taken to reverse the situation, the 'arnasguneak' could soon disappear, leading to a clear decline in Basque-speaking municipalities. In response, the organization has called for awakening, in collaboration with various stakeholders across Euskal Herria.
The purpose of the Basque-Speaking Municipalities Day is to commemorate the contribution and importance of these municipalities and their 'arnasguneak', which are considered "essential". A representative, who is the mayor of Markina-Xemein and a member of UEMA's executive board, explained that they want this day to be "the day of all Basque-speaking municipalities", to highlight in a festive atmosphere the contribution they all make to the revitalization of the Basque language.

"The latest research and data have triggered red alarms. If nothing is done to reverse the situation, the 'arnasguneak' could soon disappear, and the decline in Basque-speaking municipalities will be evident."

During the main event at noon, UEMA will present "urgent measures to maintain the 'arnasguneak'" and, at the same time, pay tribute to the residents of Otxandio who are learning Basque. A Basque language councilor from Otxandio stated that "we have worked with enthusiasm, together with local associations and agents, and we want to call on all Basque speakers in Euskal Herria to join this enthusiasm".
A full day's program has been organized, which will also include UEMA's general assembly in the morning. Elgorriaga (Navarre) has applied to join UEMA, and if accepted, the association will reach 121 municipalities. This initiative was born to promote collaboration between public institutions, agents, and citizens, with the aim of "strengthening" Basque-speaking municipalities and raising public awareness.
The song for the Basque-Speaking Municipalities Day has also been presented: Zazpi harri, zazpi herri (Seven stones, seven towns). Sergio Meurio and John Learreta created the song and music, and the lyrics were composed at the Otxandio school. Students from the Otxandio school also provided the vocals for the song.
