The appearance of jellyfish, notably Portuguese man o' war, along the Bizkaia coastline has sparked alarm. These creatures have been detected on beaches including La Arena, Gorrondatxe, Barinatxe, Arriatera, and Muriola, and can cause injuries if touched.
Amidst pleasant temperatures and water at 21 degrees Celsius, the jellyfish presence has necessitated changes in beach flag status. Gorrondatxe beach shifted from a green to a yellow flag, Arriatera from yellow to red, and Muriola from green to red, prohibiting swimming.
With high tide scheduled for 15:16, swimming is permitted without restriction at Ereaga, Arrigunaga, Plentzia, Gorliz, Armintza, Aritzatxu, Laidatxu, San Antonio, Laga, Ea, Ogella, Isuntza, Karraspio, and Arrigorri beaches. At San Antonio, swimming was initially prohibited but has since been changed to a green flag.
Caution is advised for swimmers at Laida, Bakio, Barinatxe, Las Arenas, and La Arena beaches.
Furthermore, swimming is strictly forbidden at Toña beach due to poor water quality.
