Birth Rate in Bizkaia Shows Slight Increase in 2025

According to Eustat data, Bizkaia recorded 6,593 births in 2025, an increase of 172 from the previous year, indicating a recovery.

The birth rate in Bizkaia showed a slight upward trend during 2025, with 6,593 births recorded, which is 172 more than in 2024, according to data from Eustat.

The entire Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) also experienced a 2.8% increase in births in 2025, totaling 13,297 children, 360 more than the previous year. Almost half of these births occurred in Bizkaia.
Among the historical territories, Araba registered 2,157 births, a 3% increase, while Gipuzkoa recorded 4,547 births, an increase of 2.8%. This growth is partly attributed to a significant surge in births during the last quarter of 2025, when 3,438 Basques were born, a 6.1% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
In the fourth quarter, Gipuzkoa saw the largest increase with 1,172 births (up 9.4%), followed by Bizkaia with 1,704 (up 4.6%), and Araba with 562 (up 4.3%). Of the total births, 50.6% were first children, 35.1% were second, and 14.3% were third or subsequent children.
Regarding the mother's age, the 35 to 39 age group accounted for the highest number of births (35.2%), followed by those aged 30 to 34 (32.4%). This means that 67.6% of births were to women in their thirties. Mothers under 25 years old accounted for 7% of births, and among single mothers, the highest percentage (10%) was in this younger age group.
Another relevant data point from Eustat indicates that in the last quarter of 2025, 26.8% of mothers were of foreign nationality, a decrease from 29.4% in the same period of 2024. Bizkaia had the lowest rate in this category (25.3%), compared to 27.2% in Gipuzkoa and 30.2% in Araba.
