Today's traffic has been complicated across Gipuzkoa due to a large number of vehicles. At the AP-8 toll booth in Irun, heading towards Baiona, 10-kilometer traffic jams were reported, extending to the Biriatou toll.
On the same highway, but in the opposite direction towards San Sebastián, queues reached approximately five kilometers. Similar congestion was observed at the Zarautz toll booth, also with five-kilometer queues heading towards the provincial capital.
The Basque Government's Department of Security confirmed the high traffic flow throughout the day.
Given the expected high traffic volume in the coming days, the Irun City Council will implement a special vehicle monitoring and control operation starting this Friday, August 14th, aiming to prevent gridlock in the city center.
Irun's mayor, Cristina Laborda, mentioned that while previous years saw managed situations, many residents faced difficulties returning home. This year's concern stems from France's increased border controls at Biriatu, a factor beyond the local council's control.
