Patxi Pérez has assumed the captaincy of the Public Alarde in Irun, taking over from Maite Vergara. Just days before his official debut, Pérez expressed considerable calm, stating he feels "zero nerves". "It's a privilege," he declared, admitting he never imagined reaching the position of General.
Regarding the organization, Pérez has received valuable support from previous generals, particularly Maite Vergara and Inma Landa. "I am quite organized and started working a long time ago," he explained, assuring that everything is in order, although he doesn't rule out "something might slip up" at the last minute.
The opportunity to become general arose "when some people thought of me". Pérez confessed to having doubts, especially due to his lack of prior horseback riding experience, but after deep reflection and consultation with family and friends, he accepted the challenge. "It's a responsibility, it's a lot of work, and you are in the public eye," he noted.
He has formed a new working team, including Naiara Díez as the new commander. "Mostly new people, although there are some who have held positions of responsibility," he commented. He is confident that the team "will do a phenomenal job".
Regarding Maite Vergara's legacy, Pérez admires that she has left "the bar very high" and is learning a great deal from her, receiving "small pieces of advice" that are very helpful.
He admits that the most difficult part has been learning to ride a horse, a task that required "many hours of practice". He eagerly anticipates the entrance to San Juan and seeing his family during the procession.
This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Public Alarde. Pérez recalled the event at the Irun City Council to highlight the struggle of women 30 years ago to parade equally. "The Irun City Council continues to look the other way, and we don't understand it," he lamented, advocating for the Alarde to unite with the Council and be organized for all citizens.
He believes that the "normalization of the two alardes is the worst thing that could happen to Irun", as they argue the Public Alarde is not an "option" but a reflection of equality. His goal is for the City Council to organize an Alarde "for all citizens" in the coming years.
