The Department of Mobility, Tourism and Spatial Planning of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa is set to expand the Lurraldebus E78 line, which covers the route between Irun and Hondarribia, with new night services.
Previously, this line only operated on Fridays and Saturdays. However, within the next two weeks, three additional trips in each direction will be added from Sunday to Thursday. This measure comes in response to a request from the hospitality sector in the Bidasoaldea area, aiming to provide a safer and more convenient way for workers to return home after their shifts, without relying on private vehicles or electric scooters.
The new services will commence operations from May 17. Buses departing from Hondarribia will leave at 23:15, 23:45, and 00:15. In the opposite direction, from Irun, departure times will be at 23:30, 00:00, and 00:30. These extended hours are expected to benefit not only hospitality workers but also other users traveling for leisure or various reasons.

"Facilitating that no one needs to have a private vehicle to get home, and especially because many families do not have a private vehicle and the alternative they had was to walk, take a scooter, or depend on another person."
It has been emphasized that this initiative will foster equal opportunities in the region, offering a secure solution for workers. Furthermore, complementing the E77 line, Bidasoaldea will now be connected with night services throughout the entire week.

"We are enabling a more equitable society because anyone can access different services, employment, or leisure on equal terms with other people who have private transport, also providing a much more sustainable alternative."
Representatives from the hospitality association have also welcomed this measure, particularly for filling a gap in night-time scheduling and enhancing worker safety by reducing the need for riskier transport methods like electric scooters in adverse conditions.
