This Sunday, Irun will host the 105th edition of the Done Pedro Sari Nagusia, the state's longest-running cycling race, featuring a renewed route. The Club Ciclista Irunés organizes this prestigious amateur event, which presents a new 131.2-kilometer course, omitting the Erlaitz climb and including ascents to Gaztelu and Amaiur.
Daniel Gómez, the club's president, emphasizes that the race "has a lot of work and history behind it." This year, the organization anticipates "more excitement" with the introduced novelties, particularly with "the final flourish in Irun" after entering Navarra.
Meanwhile, Jorge García, the course designer, explains that the route's foundation remains the same, starting from Plaza Urdanibia. Although the feared Erlaitz ascent has been removed, he warns of "four powerful ramps." After following the Bidasoa river, the first surprise will come in Malerreka with the climb to Gaztelu. Subsequently, the peloton will cross Amaiur for the first time in this race, before returning towards Irun via Otxondo and Endarlatsa.
An exciting finale is expected in the final 15 kilometers, which will link the climbs of San Marcial (via Lastaola) and Olaberria (descending via Estebenea), culminating on San Marcial street. Borja Olazabal, the Sports delegate, highlights the value of "continuing to bet on this event" and predicts a "spectacular" finish, with the hope of "awarding the championship to a local cyclist" in a race that is "very special for Irun."
