The incident occurred on Sunday, May 11, around 9:20 PM on Europa street in Irun's Behobia neighborhood. Ertzaintza officers, while on patrol in an official vehicle, observed a white car approaching them head-on, driving against the flow of traffic.
The police stopped their vehicle and ordered the car driving in the wrong direction to halt, but the driver ignored the commands. He accelerated and fled, prompting the Ertzaintza officers to initiate a pursuit, activating their patrol car's lights and sirens.
Upon reaching the N-121A road, where the driver continued at high speed and still in the wrong direction, he repeatedly rammed the police vehicle laterally in an attempt to force it off the road. Both cars reached the Behobia roundabout on the GI-636 road, where the fleeing driver lost control of his car and collided with a traffic sign. Despite this, he continued driving against traffic at high speed, “creating situations of grave danger and risking the safety of other drivers.”
Finally, Ertzaintza agents managed to intercept the French-registered vehicle before it crossed the international bridge of Behobia towards Iparralde. The driver was arrested and charged with a crime against Road Safety for reckless driving, another for damage to a police vehicle, and a third for assault on agents of authority.
The police car sustained bodywork damage, although the officers, who were unharmed in the collisions, were able to return with it to the police station. The detainee was taken to a health center in Irun for treatment of possible injuries and then transferred to police facilities for processing before being brought before a judge.
