Hondarribia FE has made a triumphant return to the Division de Honor Regional after an eight-year absence, capping off an outstanding season. The decisive (1-4) victory last Saturday against Behobia at Artía allowed Javi Etxebeste's squad to celebrate promotion and the league title with one game left to play. Their current tally of 62 points is now unreachable for the second and third-placed teams, both on 57 points.
The 'greens' victory initially came with some suspense, as the home team took the lead early on with a goal from Koldo Aramburu (6'). Jokin Tellechea equalized in the 37th minute, and a brace from Julen Kerejeta (44' and 47') began to pave the way for the visitors' celebration. Iker Rodríguez sealed the definitive 1-4 scoreline in the 75th minute.
Regarding the match's progression, Etxebeste commented that it was "a first half of great tension" for both teams. With a large contingent of fans having traveled from Hondarribia, "the two goals we scored before halftime helped us relax a lot, and the second half was completely different." The celebration began with the final whistle and continued in the streets of their hometown until the early hours of the morning.
This Saturday at 16:00, at Ondartza and with Internacional CD as guests, Hondarribia FE will conclude the league season that marks their return to Division de Honor after eight years. The club is preparing a small celebration. Following this match, there will be one more fixture: the following weekend, Hondarribia FE will play on neutral ground (to be determined) against Aloña Mendi, the group II leader, to determine the league champion. "It's not the main objective, but we will go to compete and try to win," the coach noted.
After a somewhat inconsistent start to the season, marked by several draws and a loss, Etxebeste's players accelerated in the final months of 2025 and took the lead in late December, a position they have not relinquished since. 2026 continued with the same positive momentum until the final month of the competition, which saw the team's only dip in form throughout the entire season.
A draw and two consecutive defeats brought their pursuers closer in the standings, but the match on May 9th was almost decisive. Hondarribia won at Ondartza against Axular (2-0), while Osdar and Roteta were held to draws in their respective games.
These results meant that the 'greens' had their first 'match-ball' last weekend, which ultimately led to promotion and the championship title. Thus, Hondarribia FE returns to the category in which they have played for over three decades.
