The Ertzaintza has arrested two minors, aged 14 and 17, in the border city of Irun in connection with a brutal assault on a taxi driver that occurred several months ago. The attack left the driver with severe facial injuries requiring surgery. Despite their young age, the detainees have an extensive criminal record, according to the Department of Security.
The incident took place on April 4 near the Casco Viejo area of Irun. A group of youths confronted the taxi and threw liquid through an open window. The taxi driver, a 58-year-old Spanish national, got out of the vehicle to confront them, at which point two of them struck him in the face, causing a fractured jaw and an ear injury.
The victim received medical attention at a hospital and underwent surgery days later for his injuries. Following a report filed with the Ertzaintza, the police investigation identified the two alleged perpetrators, both minors, who were located and arrested last Friday on charges of assault.
Both minors, of North African and South American origin respectively, were brought before the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. The prosecution requested their placement in juvenile detention centers, but the judge has only ordered the admission of the younger one, aged 14, while releasing the 17-year-old. The Juvenile Prosecutor's Office plans to appeal this latter decision, according to judicial sources.
