The 'artistic apostles' workshops at Arantzazu sanctuary have gathered over 550 children since 2013, with a new opportunity this Saturday to explore the work of artist Lucio Muñoz.

The art workshops initiated in 2013 at the Arantzazu sanctuary have been highly successful, attracting over 550 children. These activities, supported by the Oñati City Council, Arantzazulab, and the San Sebastián-based studio Maushaus, offer children the chance to discover and understand the sanctuary's significant artworks.
This year, the work of abstract painter Lucio Muñoz (1929-1998) takes center stage. His art, particularly noted for its poetic and expressive use of wood, is exemplified in the Basilica's main altarpiece. The workshop held on June 15th was fully booked, leading to an additional session for children aged 6 to 12 on Saturday, June 22nd, focusing on engaging with the artist's work through play and experimentation.
Arantzazuko Adiskideak, in collaboration with the Sanctuary, Arantzazulab, and the Oñati City Council, will introduce the younger participants to this Madrid-born artist. Muñoz created the magnificent altarpiece of this Basilica in 1962.
The event will commence at 10:30 AM at the Gandiaga Topagunea with a brief introduction to the workshop and a projected image presentation. This will be followed by a guided tour of the Arantzazu Basilica. Inside, facilitators will discuss the artist's work, exploring its sensations, visions, and textures with the children, enabling them to later reflect these in their own creations.
Returning to the Gandiaga Topagunea, participants will engage in individual, small-format work, creating pieces with free themes inspired by Muñoz's textures, planes, and colors. The session will conclude with a collaborative creation of a large-format apse, involving material manipulation, application, scoring, sanding, and painting in the artist's style. Finally, families will be invited to view the children's work and hear their explanations.
Registration is required by writing to adiskideak@arantzazu.org or calling 688 613 840. Each participant will be charged a fee of 5 euros.
