Osakidetza treated 59 people in its ophthalmology services following the solar eclipse on August 12. Of these, 22 cases were registered in Primary Care emergencies and 37 in hospital emergencies, distributed across Araba with 15, Bizkaia with 31, and Gipuzkoa with 13.
Osakidetza has not confirmed any serious eye injuries attributable to the eclipse. The activity proceeded normally, without organizational issues and with adequate response times. The Basque health service will continue to monitor eclipse-related healthcare activity.
The majority of consultations received were related to mild eye discomfort, photopsias, and solar exposure without adequate protection. In Primary Care, 22 patients were treated, mostly with mild symptoms associated with solar exposure. In hospital care, the Cruces University Hospital (OSI Ezkerraldea Enkarterri Cruces) handled the largest volume with 15 patients, also receiving referrals from other centers in Bizkaia. The Araba University Hospital at its Txagorritxu site treated 12 patients in Araba.
The hospital emergency network registered a total of 37 episodes with eclipse-related diagnoses during the night of August 12 and the early morning of August 13. Osakidetza has conducted specific monitoring and will maintain active surveillance of healthcare demand in the coming days, as effects from inadequate exposure can manifest later.
