The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has confirmed that it is working jointly with the Basque Government and Renfe to integrate the BAT card as a payment method for Álava's commuter rail service. This measure would facilitate combined journeys between the commuter train, TUVISA, the tram, and Alavabus.
Currently, there is no specific launch date or detailed conditions of use. However, during the Public Space, Neighborhoods, Mobility, and Traffic Commission, it was emphasized that this integration is a priority objective.
“"We have been working on incorporating the BAT card as a payment method since Renfe Commuter Rail became a competence of the Basque Government."
The goal is for the BAT card to be a reality in the commuter rail service by 2026. The councilor did not specify when the system might be activated or how it would be applied, nor if the integration would allow for discounts, transfers, or combined fares.
The introduction of the BAT card to the commuter rail would represent a practical improvement for those traveling by public transport in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava, allowing them to pay for the train with the same card used for other services. This would be particularly beneficial for individuals who use Álava's railway axis for daily commutes related to work, studies, or services.
