The Araba Euskaraz initiative is vital for the network of ikastolas in Álava. Igone Zubizarreta (Izarra, 1988), codirector of the Argantzon ikastola, has discussed the project's stability and future challenges. Despite concerns about declining birth rates, the ikastola remains healthy, continuing to attract children from surrounding areas.
The ikastola offers the full educational stage from 0 to 12 years, with classrooms organized by mixed age groups. Zubizarreta explains that this "age mix provides each child with the challenge or material they need at each moment," respecting individual learning paces and development levels. Small group sizes allow for a deep understanding of students and tailored support.
Pedagogically, the ikastola guarantees the Basque language and Basque culture, promoting "meaningful learning" through manipulative materials and project-based work, avoiding traditional textbooks. The aim is the "holistic development of the child as a person," fostering active and autonomous individuals.
Founded in 2003, the ikastola now operates across two buildings, covering both Early Childhood and Primary Education. The initial goal was to "guarantee Basque in Treviño," but to progress, it was necessary to "step outside" due to administrative ties, as Zubizarreta noted.
The short-term objective is to fully consolidate the project. Long-term, it would be "ideal and natural for Treviño to administratively be part of Álava," which would greatly facilitate the ikastola's establishment. The administrative border impacts service provision, particularly for children with special needs, due to differing criteria between Álava and Burgos.
After twelve years in leadership, Zubizarreta is pleased to see the ikastola "gradually grow and strengthen." She emphasized, "It is very important for the ikastola to continue moving forward and fulfill the initial specific objective: guaranteeing Basque in Treviño."
Araba Euskaraz continues to be significant, even with its format evolving to include year-round activities. It serves as an excellent meeting point for Álava's ikastolas, strengthening their network and "making the network of Basque language advocates ever larger and stronger."
