Álava will celebrate International Museum Day with four days of special activities between May 16th and 19th. The program will feature guided tours, poetry, historical reenactments, a new Goya exhibition, and astronomical outreach proposals.
The Foral Museum Network has prepared activities in various locations across the territory to bring its collections closer to the public and strengthen museums as meeting places. The event is held annually on May 18th, and this year it coincides with the 80th anniversary of ICOM, the International Council of Museums, under the theme “Museums uniting a divided world.”
The program will begin on May 16th at the Álava Natural Sciences Museum with a guided tour of the Herbario VIT. On the same day, the Museum of Fine Arts will host a poetry recital in front of the museum's paintings, as part of the Poetas en Mayo festival. On May 17th, the Arkaia archaeological site will host a historical reenactment of the daily life of a patrician family in ancient Rome.
On May 18th, the Museum of Fine Arts will present the exhibition “Fantasy and Reason. Goya Prints in the Collection of the Álava Museum of Fine Arts.” The exhibition brings together the four major series by the Aragonese artist: Caprichos, Desastres de la guerra, Tauromaquia, and Disparates. It will open to the public from May 19th and offers a perspective on war, violence, and injustice through his graphic work.
The program will conclude on May 19th with an astronomical outreach day organized with the Aranzadi Science Society. These activities are also part of the 40th anniversary of the Natural Sciences Museum and are already fully booked.
