The Councillor for Security, Bingen Zupiria, has taken responsibility this Sunday, May 24th, for what occurred during the reception of the Global Sumud Flotilla members last Saturday, while also announcing an investigation into the Ertzaintza's conduct.
The Councillor stated that the incidents at Bilbao Airport "should not have happened" and that those responsible must analyze whether the Ertzaintza adhered to current guidelines, as well as certain behaviors that he described as "provocative."
Zupiria highlighted the trust the Ertzaintza generates in Basque society and expressed concern that the image of the region and its police force might be linked to the situations that occurred, especially given the high sensitivity in Europe and particularly in Euskadi regarding the Palestinian cause.
The Councillor will appear next Tuesday before the Committee on Institutions, Public Governance, and Security of the Basque Parliament to provide explanations regarding the incidents at Loiu Airport, assuring that efforts will be made to "clarify the incidents and any resulting responsibilities as soon as possible."
During these events, four individuals were arrested for serious disobedience, resistance, and assaulting authority agents. The Department of Security explained that the arrival, which was not previously communicated to the Ertzaintza, coincided with the arrival and departure of fans for the rugby finals being held in Bilbao.
The behavior of some of the gathered individuals obstructed the normal movement of people leaving the airport's departure area and led to confrontations with Ertzaintza officers, who had to use their standard batons.
The Internal Affairs Directorate of the Ertzaintza has launched an investigation to verify whether the agents' actions comply with current instructions.
