The Department of Sustainable Mobility of the Basque Government, through the public entity Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS), has awarded Construcciones Moyúa S.L. the contract for the rehabilitation works of the Topo International Bridge of Irun. The project has a budget of 2.5 million euros and a 16-month execution period, with works set to commence in the autumn.
The International Bridge of Irun crosses the Bidasoa River and connects the city of Irun with Hendaye. This intervention is the result of studies and analyses conducted by ETS on the railway network it manages in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia.
To address the various pathologies and deficiencies observed during previous inspection work, the initial phase of the project includes the reinforcement of the foundations of piers P1 and P4. Subsequently, the repair of the viaduct will continue, using scaffolding supported by the foundations, which will also serve as storage for repair materials.
The rehabilitation works will primarily involve protection against carbonation of concrete elements, removal of vegetation and calcified surfaces, re-pointing and reconstruction of damaged stonework, and replacement of the railing. The track in this section will also be renewed, and the deck waterproofed.
